As human beings, we all have a given mission to change something for the better in this world. Unfortunately, we either do not or simply do not want to understand the real purpose of our existence in life. In the end, people’s negligence and lack of self-confidence, regardless of their nationality, race or religion pose a real threat to the eradication of human and cultural values on a global scale. Nowadays, conflicts in different corners of the world are real examples of erosion of human values. However, this trend does not give us a reason to come directly to the pessimistic end concerning the impossibility of promotion of human values on a large scale. Estimable initiatives undertaken by some people give us a light of hope to change this reality. Leyla Aliyeva is one of those people who undertook this sacred mission. To look at the activities carried out by these people proves important in terms of promoting ideas of human values among people.
As Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, General Coordinator of Intercultural Dialogue for the Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation of the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Director of the International Dialogue for Environmental Action, Leyla Aliyeva initiates various campaigns, the chief purpose of which is to strengthen cultural dialogue among nations, promote education among young people, and raise awareness on environmental issues.
In the extent of activities at the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Leyla Aliyeva saw through a wide scale of charitable activities. As a non-commercial organization, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation supports various programs and projects in the area of culture, environment, health, etc. The significance of these projects is that they are not limited to Azerbaijan—the main functioning area of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation—but also cover a broad geographical area beyond Azerbaijan. As mentioned by Leyla Aliyeva, “the role of the Foundation is not only to promote the national culture of Azerbaijan outside the country, but also to spread the seeds of tolerance and harmony all around the world”.
As General Coordinator of Intercultural Dialogue for the Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Leyla Aliyeva plays a very active role in strengthening the cooperation among youth organizations that perform in different corners of the world and promote cultural and moral values among young people. The implementation of such kinds of activities is also indispensable in terms of realization of the tasks identified by the UNESCO Convention on Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions—such as preserving the cultural diversity, and strengthening tolerance and mutual respect among people. This also paves the way for affirming the hybrid nature of cultures as a source of enrichment of the world heritage, rather than sowing the seeds of intrigue among nations and cultures.
Informing the world community on the realities of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem and the related “Khojaly tragedy” is one of the main foci of activities carried out by Leyla Aliyeva. As a result of this problem, Azerbaijan not only has lost twenty percent of its territory, but also suffered serious damage to cultural and historical monuments of the country. As a bleeding wound of this conflict, the “Khojali tragedy”, which was committed not only against ethnic Azerbaijanis, but also against human values and rights, represents a lesson the global community needs to learn in order to avoid of further atrocities and ethnic discrimination in the world. The purpose of the International Awareness Campaign “Justice for Khojaly”, which was initiated by Leyla Aliyeva, is to inform the world community of these brutal activities committed in Khojaly. This campaign has already produced positive results in terms of recognition of this crime against humanity and has gone a long way toward acceptance of the principles of human values as a core element for co-existence on a large scale.
Thus, strengthening peace and security and ensuring sustainable development in the world considerably depends on the exchange of ideas and interaction among nations and cultures. Therefore, the activities pursued by Leyla Aliyeva prove significant for establishing an environment of dialogue within a global context and for bringing harmony and tolerance among people, regardless of their ethnic or religious affilation.
